Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez: 20 Pre-Fight Preparations for Pacquiao

By (Featured Columnist) on October 12, 2011

Manny Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 knockouts) will face Juan Manuel Marquez (53-5-1, 39 knockouts) November 12 at the MGM Grand live on HBO pay-per-view.
He has less than a month to get ready. His preparation has begun and training has intensified. But what exactly will he need to prepare? Each fall calls for a different preparation. Sometimes preparation is changing a habit that can be costly as the battle heads down the stretch. Sometimes preparation is inserting additional habits or never picking up on habits that may occur with age, complacency and the influence of others.
What preparations will Pacquiao use in facing Marquez? I have a few ideas.

20. Don't Drink Urine

Juan Manuel Marquez revealed in the 24/7 documentary leading up to his big fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. that the secret to his latest string of victories has been drinking his own pee. Why?
He says there's protein and nutrients in there he's missing out on. Judging by his performance in the one-sided thumping he received from Mayweather, the pee doesn't work. So Pacquiao should avoid drinking his own pee.

19. Don't Get Distracted by Wife

Women are beautiful and wonderful entities, but many male athletes and coaches have noted their ability to distract male athletes from their ultimate goal: winning. Pacquiao's wife Jinkee, based on recent interviews, seems to understand the dedication and time needed to be the best boxer in the world. Each relationship is different, but anything is possible with understanding. So long as Pacquiao and his wife can maintain their understanding of each other's needs and desires, all should be well.

18. Don't Get Distracted by Basketball, Be More Mike Tyson Than Michael Jordan

Pacquiao loves basketball so much he sometimes substitutes training time for playing basketball much to the chagrin of his head trainer Freddie Roach. Roach has banned him from playing basketball close to a fight. Pacquiao recently participated in a basketball tournament of his own creation for the second year in a row. Pacquiao formed his own basketball team and offered money to the winners. The tournament has concluded with a month to spare before Pacquiao's big fight with Marquez.

17. Don't Get Distracted by Wealth

With money, comes problems. Long lost relatives just show up.
People beg, people sue, people swindle. But Pacquiao has to place his finances in the back of his mind to focus on boxing.

16. Don't Get Distracted by Mayweather

Floyd Mayweather is without doubt Pacquiao's biggest rival outside of the ring but Pacquiao cannot take his eyes off Marquez, his biggest rival inside the ring. Mayweather is loud, crass and arrogant, but there's no need to pay him any attention until the post-fight and post-fight press conference where hopefully a victorious Pacquiao will call him

15. Don't Get Distracted by Potential Opposition

Timothy Bradley is undefeated, fast and had a good chin, but he is not Pacquiao's current opponent. He's the latest young bright rising star signed to Top Rank Promotions, Pacquiao's promoter.
Many believe Pacquiao will take the fight, but the speculation is just speculation. A new potential Pacquiao opponent seems to pop up every week, let alone month. New challengers are always aiming to dethrone the camp, but a great performance against Marquez can make them think thrice.

14. Keep Sparring with Amir Khan

Amir Khan (26-1, 18 knockouts) is young, fast and tall. He's also intelligent and has gotten the best of Pacquiao is sparring before.
Both fighters are trained by Freddie Roach, who believes their sparring challenges the fighters to up their games.
Despite the possibility being discussed by Roach about one day pitting Pacquiao against Khan in a professional boxing match, both fighters are facing different ring foes for now.
If Khan and Pacquiao should ever have to face each other in a world title boxing match, then each fighter will adopt their own individual training camps. Until then, the two make a great pair.

13. Don't Get Distracted by Politics

Pacquiao is currently a congressman of the Philippines. He plans to run for executive office in 2013 and vice president by 2016.
What will this do to his career? Who knows, but he shouldn't be thinking about it right now. Politics can be confusing and distracting. As a congressman, it's highly probable that Pacquiao has to listen to all kinds of political rhetoric. Then he has to agree or disagree and come up with an alternative to the situations given.
Tough stuff, but so far Pacquiao's balanced politics and boxing. Hopefully he'll keep that balance during training for his next match with Marquez.

12. Don't Get Distracted by Film Career

Pacquiao may love film and boxing, but it's obvious where it shines and that's not in form of a film career.
Maybe in the future he can slip into a good film, but his focus should be more on following good fight game plans than scripts.

11. Don't Get Distracted by Music Career

Pacquiao isn't bad on the microphone, but his boxing is where he's great. He has time to sing later in celebration of the beatdown he is training to give on November 12.

10. Don't Get Distracted by Celebrity

Pacquiao is the most famous person in the world from the Philippines, so naturally there's pandemonium whenever he visits.
He attracts crowds of autograph-seeking Filipino people. Pacquiao just can't let that get to him while he's training. Though he has recently left his home country for his training camp in America, he's still a popular celebrity here and that can be a distraction if not properly kept in check.

9. Obey the Roach

Sometimes Pacquiao doesn't obey his trainer's commands, but Roach only has his best interests in mind. Roach has lifted Pacquiao from essentially a one-handed limited fighter with potential to a two-handed powerhouse who has just about fulfilled every ounce of his potential. After such a successful transformation, it only makes sense to listen to the man behind it all.

8. Don't Get Distracted by Celebrity Friends

Pacquiao has many celebrity friends, from Paris Hilton to Mark Wahlberg and Entourage actor Jeremy Piven.
Sometimes they visit him in the gym as he trains. As always, that can bring even more media than usual, resulting in even further distractions.Pacquiao can always talk to his celebrity pals during the press conference after he puts Marquez to sleep in the ring.

7. Watch the First Two Fights Carefully

Pacquiao has been able to knock Marquez down in each of their past two fights together, yet still struggled for the victory.
Marquez was able to salvage a draw in their first match. Then Pacquiao managed a split decision in their second.
Both were highly close and it would be a mistake to not correct the habits that led to such a close match.

6. Don't Be Fooled by Marquez's First Fight with Mayweather

Many are reading into Marquez's lone trip to 147 against Mayweather as a sign that he'll perform that badly in his second trip to 147 against Pacquiao. What many fail to realize is that not only is Mayweather a completely different type of fighter, but Marquez is smart enough to not beef up the same way.
Marquez has reported to the media that he's got a nutritionist to help him gain weight properly this time rather than how he did against Mayweather. He likely won't be as slow and helpless as he looked against Mayweather back in 2009. Match that with his previous history with Pacquiao and Pacquiao's more offensive style, and Marquez may do better than most think. This is something Pacquiao will have to anticipate.

5. Don't Underestimate the Nacho

If Marquez and Pacquiao are rivals, that would also make Nacho Beristain and Freddie Roach rivals as well. Beristain is the most respected Mexican trainer of the modern era. He's trained both Juan and his brother Rafael Marquez to multiple world titles at various weight classes. Pacquiao and Roach have to realize that Beristain is smart enough to not only realize what his fighter is up against, but make an excellent attack plan to combat it.

4. Follow Alex's Instructions in Training

Alex Ariza is the conditioning coach the helped Pacquiao go from a 130-lb fighter that struggled with Marquez in March 2008 to a 147-lb fighter that dominated Oscar De La Hoya in December 2008.
That's a short period of time, but it's Ariza's conditioning of Pacquiao and Pacquiao's listening to Ariza that allow such a dynamic enhancement to happen in such a short time.
Pacquiao has to keep listening to keep winning.

3. Don't Let the Promoting Take Away from Training

Pacquiao and Marquez have embarked on global tour in promotion of this fight. Manilla, Philippines. Mexico City, Mexico.
New York and Los Angeles. Various talk shows and interviews galore indicate that Pacquiao is talking more before this bout than ever before. The more he's talking, the less he's training. If he wants to get the knockout against Marquez, he'll have to suppress that mouth and press those punches.

2. Follow a Good Diet

What Pacquiao eats can matter just as much as, if not more than, how Pacquiao trains. But as long as his kitchen prepares the right food and conditioning coach Ariza keeps his eye on Pacquiao, he should do fine.
